Peoria Street Bridge and CTA Station - Work Completed Fall 2015!

As part of the overall Circle Interchange project, the Peoria Street Bridge, as well as the adjacent CTA Blue Line Station, was closed for construction beginning May 2014 until Summer 2015. There was limited access to pedestrian traffic and the elevator was installed in November 2015. For ADA accessibility, please use Halsted CTA station.

View construction progress.

The Peoria Street Bridge was closed in its entirety and reopened to pedestrian traffic in Summer 2015. The CTA Blue Line station was closed for rehabilitation and reopened in Summer 2015.

The detour for pedestrian traffic for the Peoria Street Bridge closure was:

  • Van Buren Street to Morgan Street to Harrison Street, and
  • Van Buren Street to Halsted Street to Harrison Street.

The nearby CTA station entrances at Morgan Street and Halsted Street opened during the construction of the Peoria Street project.

The construction contract was awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure Co. on March 31, 2014, and the work involved the complete removal and replacement of the existing bridge structure which carries Peoria Street over the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290).  The new bridge structure was longer to create space underneath along I-290 for future improvements planned for the interchange between the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) and I-290, locally known as the Circle Interchange. The Peoria Street project also included the associated work along the Peoria Street corridor from Harrison Street to Van Buren Street to make it a pedestrian/bicyclist only facility.  Landscaping, lighting, wayfinding signage, and other features were incorporated.

The existing brick CTA station is located on the Peoria Street Bridge, and was removed as part of the project.  The project also included the rehabilitation of the existing glass station house adjacent to the Peoria Street Bridge.  The rehabilitation included the installation of a new ADA compliant elevator, roof replacement, new exterior panels, replacement lighting, installation of surveillance cameras, and relocating the turnstiles into the glass building.

Peoria Street Features Include:

  • Peoria Street provides a corridor for pedestrians and bicyclists only.
  • The bridge is over 50 feet wide to provide an open feeling when crossing the expressway
  • The Peoria Street pavement north of the bridge is converted to a pedestrian way
  • Sidewalk south of the bridge is widened to Harrison Street
  • Landscape and aesthetic features is added including plantings, irrigation, lighting, sitting walls, and wayfinding signage
  • Sidewalks are reconstructed to current ADA standards per the City of Chicago requirements
  • CTA station is upgraded to include a new ADA compliant elevator, new roof, new exterior panels, replacement lighting, and surveillance cameras.

The Department appreciates your patience and understanding as we work to improve the multi-modal connections in your community.
